Scorpions Field of Dreams

Updated: March 13, 2016

Hull Scorpions Baseball Club are looking at building their own Field of Dreams in a deprived area of Hull that is the spiritual home of British Baseball.

The scorpions plans for a purpose built ball park will make a huge impact with their mission to regenerate Baseball in the city.

The site for the baseball field will be at Alderman Kneeshaw Park in the Est of Hull where back in the 1960’s, it was one of the top fields in the UK. Scorpions have now secured a 25 year lease from the local council on which to develop and build a new baseball facility.

The facility will be used by the club and will also act as a focal point for our schools programme, as well as our work in the local community.  We are hoping to inspire people of all ages come and try the sport and enable them to play in a dedicated facility.

Once complete the facility will be one of the best in the country and the Hull will once again play a pivotal role in British baseball.

This field will be the focal point for the work we do in the local community and will help us play an important role in improving the health and social cohesion of the area by giving all people the opportunity to participate in sport.         The majority of sports in the city run competitive teams, which once the team is full, children and adults are turned away because they are considered not good or fit enough for the team.

Hull Scorpions operate differently. By forming a new team within the club when we have too many players for one team, we’ll never say no to anyone interested in giving the sport a go. Regardless of age or ability.

The plans will revitalise a park that is underused and will allow local people to engage in a fun sport that has a rich history in the area. Mature residents remember watching baseball games in the park in their youth and this will rekindle their interest. As well as engaging with young people who may have been cast aside by other sports we hope to return baseball to the city of Hull.

What we are looking to create

  • Erect a permanent home run fence
  • Erect a backstop
  • Build batting cages
  • Provide spectator seating

How we’ll get it done

  • The land has already been secured and the plans for the field are being drawn up and will be submitted shortly
  • We will shortly be geo-mapping the area so we can see the lay of the land.
  • We will then need to calculate the materials we will need.
  • We have approx. £5000 of our club funds that will enable us to make a start on the facility
  • We can then erect the backstop which will be the next step
  • Then we will construct the pitching mound and infield area
  • The final stages will be the erecting of the batting cages and home run fence
  • The addition of spectator seating will allow people to watch a game in comfort
